This is the inside of a small dugout dwelling, behind the walls is dirt, and the roof is made of canvas spread over timber, then having about 2 feet of dirt and rocks placed on top for insulation. This was the first home for a lot of settlers as they traveled to parts unknown and required a quick method of providing shelter. As you can see we have the kitchen (stove) dining area (table and chairs) and bedroom (Bed) all in this space. The size made it easier to build and heat in the winter months. Family portraits hang on the support post to make it more homey.
