This is how great great grandma would have shopped if she lived in the Wild West. Most stores were like todays supermarkets, having a stock of a variety of items, which were necessary for daily life. In addition to food stuffs there were hardware, clothes, tools and items such as the old meet grinder on the counter. Supplies were limited, and deliveries often were unpredictable. So most would have to keep a stock of items at home, this was made more likely as many of the customers lived up four hours journey from the store. No “I forgot something, I will just run back and get it now”.
